Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of water exercises with vitamin D supplements on the serum levels of antioxidant enzymes, the strength and body composition of sedentary elderly men. Method: Twenty men over 60 years old who met the inclusion criteria participated in the study. Subjects were randomized into two groups of water-based exercise with vitamin D supplementation (N = 10) and water-based exercise with placebo (N = 10). Both groups trained three sessions per week for eight weeks. 24 hours before of first and after the last session of the exercise protocol, serum levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), body composition, and strength were measured. Results: Results from this study demonstrated significant changes in serum concentrations of SOD, CAT, TAC and also lean mass, fat percentage and body mass index in both group (p<0.05). Nonetheless, there was only significant difference for fat percentage between groups (p <0.05). Conclusions: Eight weeks of water exercise increased blood antioxidant enzyme levels and improved body composition in older men, however, vitamin D supplementation with exercise did not lead to further improvement.
